Self-Improvement There are different psychological effects of stress on a person. Most of these effects are negative and can cause additional problems to your personal and professional life. Thats why it’s important to know what these effects are so you’ll know when you’ve gone too far. After all, these psychological effects of stress are not merely a figment of your imagination. They are very real and can do some serious damage if left on its own. Psychological Effect of Stress # 1: Heightened Reactions Stress can exaggerate a persons reaction to even the most trivial matters. For example, a person who has been under extreme stress for a week can easily blow up over a block of cheese. Under normal circumstances, said person might not even care for the cheese; but since he or she has been dealing with a burden for a prolonged period of time, expect over reaction. Of course, this heightened state can be either positive or negative, depending on the person. Under stress, you can be 5 times more efficient and 5 times more determined to achieve your goal. However, you can also feel 5 times more depressed or 5 times more defeated. It all depends on how you handle the situation. Psychological Effect of Stress # 2: Loss Of Concentration Stress can also lead to lack of focus. During this time, your mind is doing multiple functions. On one hand, you’re thinking about the state of the nation. On the other, you’re worrying about the important political dinner tomorrow night. Stress can trap you into thinking more about stress itself than about actually dealing with your problem. Stress also affects your memory. Don’t you notice how forgetful you become when you stress too much? During stressful projects, it is probably a good idea to invest in a planner. That way, you won’t be likely to forget anything. Psychological Effect of Stress # 3: Increased Negativity Stress can no doubt be overwhelming. And it can aggravate your feelings of negativity. Name it, you’ll feel it. Alone in the world? Most probably. You’re drowning in paperwork and you have a deadline to beat. There’s probably no one around to help you. Can this project become a success? With the rate things are going, you’ll probably barely hit the mark. All these negative thoughts and emotions are going to pop up once stress gets the best of you. Once you’ve reached this point, it is advisable to pause for a while and take a deep breath before moving forward again. People should be aware of the psychological effects of stress. Knowing about them helps you gain more control over your thoughts and your actions. Try to keep stress down or at least, learn to take a breather.
